Your gum tissue might be a little sore for a day following injection of local anesthesia.
If a lower tooth was numbed, and the injection was given in the back of the mouth, you may have some soreness to opening and closing and is usually temporary, lasting a few days, however some patient can develop trismus, or limited opening. It the muscles in the area spasm after injection. This usually resolves itself in less than 2 weeks. An over the counter pain reliever can be taken for discomfort.

If a white filling was placed, you may chew on the filling as soon as you are comfortable with the anesthetic wearing off.
We usually don't place silver amalgam fillings anymore, but if we did place one, please chew on the opposite side for 4 hours following filling placement.

Most patients experience little or no post operative discomfort. The most frequent complaints are slight tenderness of the gums and tooth sensitivity to cold drinks and foods.
